Police foil suicide bomb attack in Yobe

An attempt to blow up a police station in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, by a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber was yesterday foiled by the police in the state while they also arrested the suspect.

The suspected bomber, who was believed to have come from the southern part of the state in a pickup van, rammed the vehicle on the heaps of sandbags erected as a protective measure against any possible attack in front of the Damaturu Divisional Police Station, ‘A’ Division located in the heart of the town. The vehicle ladened with explosive devices, was immediately grounded by the vigilant policemen, while the suspect was also arrested.
Police sources said the suspect later confessed to having some Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) loaded in the pickup van.
“The explosive devices were later diffused by the anti-bomb squad in Damaturu,” the police source added.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Sanusi Rufai confirmed the incident to journalists in Damaturu. He gave the name of the suspect as Abubakar.
He said the 19-year old Abubakar was on a mission to blow off the ‘A’ Division and kill innocent residents around the police station.
Items discovered in the Chevrolet Pickup van brought by the bomber, according to the CP included five cylinders with explosives devices, 20 liters of diesel and 10 litres of Premium Motor Spirits(PMS) otherwise known as petroleum .
Other items found in his possession included five 9.5 battery charger, one fire extinguisher containing explosives and a wall clock. The CP said the suspect was undergoing interrogation, and appealed to members of the public to continue to partner with security agencies in the efforts to fight terrorism in the state and Nigeria.
